HEDIS DATA EXPERIENCE
Background on HEDIS
Interpreta’s data analytics tools are driven by following specific medical rules called HEDIS measures that are governed by the National Committee of Quality Assurance. HEDIS measures help healthcare providers to understand their member population’s healthcare. Interpreta’s analytics tools use the data collected from HEDIS measures to assess health risk factors in patients. For example, one HEDIS measure is Breast Cancer Screening. A healthcare provider can use Interpreta’s analytics tools to compare population prevalence of breast cancer and to see how many members are ready for screenings, tests, and follow-ups.
THE CHALLENGE
HEDIS measures are complicated and need to be analyzed and visualized in a simple way for practical use. There are various challenges to consider:
1) Each HEDIS measure has various dates for progressive alerts to maintain continuity in patient care. Failed HEDIS measures result in fines because of the risks to patient health.
2) Another complexity to HEDIS is the fact that each patient can potentially have 90 measures that need continuous tracking.
HOW I CONTRIBUTED
In order to address the three key challenges above, our team developed a comprehensive analysis tool that integrated various sources of data into a simple dashboard with alert features. Status updates were an important design feature needed to direct the attention of care providers to the most important concerns before any HEDIS rules are violated. The UI was simple to understand in order to manage a variety of due dates and recommendations from multiple healthcare providers. It also allowed the user to create an action plan to complete their HEDIS tasks in a prompt and efficient manner.

HEDIS Measure List
Allowed the user to know the compliance status of each measure and I made sure that the information is applied to other parts of the platform to give the user an easier way to recall the data.
I added a feature so that any care gaps in HEDIS are also shown alongside the supplemental data form so that the user always has easy access to this vital information.
Split Screen Design Pattern
I spearheaded the concept of this split screen design pattern to accommodate the efficiency of data entry for a single patient. Instead of opening a new tab, the user can launch the Supplemental Data form from anywhere within the patient’s profile for easy access. When the form is completed the user will see the status of the measure change. This shows how the two systems are working together seamlessly in the split screen.
Member Prioritization Platform
The purpose of member prioritization is to give an overview of the patient’s risk score, which is evaluated through care risk (HEDIS), disease burden (chronic conditions), medication risk, and hospitalization risk. I designed the experience and the UI of this platform to alert the physician when there are open gaps in care that need to be closed to lower the patient risk score.
